New Electric and Hybrid SUVs Having offered full-hybrid models for over 15 years both fully imported and locally assembled Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) is now set to introduce two new electrification technologies in India. This year, the company plans to launch an all-electric version of the Urban Cruiser alongside a mild-hybrid Fortuner. Here’s what we know so far about these upcoming electrified Toyota models:
1. Toyota Urban Cruiser
The Toyota Urban Cruiser is distinct from the rebadged first-generation Maruti Vitara Brezza and serves as a close sibling to the Maruti e Vitara. Its front design draws inspiration from a hammerhead shark, giving it a sleek, refined appearance rather than an aggressive one.
At the front, the Urban Cruiser features sharp headlamps, a faux upper grille, a cleaner bumper with vertical side air inlets, and a smaller central air intake all contributing to its sophisticated look. Apart from the front styling, the Urban Cruiser shares the same design and interior as the Maruti e Vitara. Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) is expected to offer the new Urban Cruiser in both standard-range front-wheel-drive (FWD) and long-range FWD variants.

The standard-range FWD variant is expected to feature a 105.8 kW (142 hp) motor with 192.5 Nm of torque, paired with a 47.8 kWh (net) LFP battery. It should accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.6 seconds, reach a top speed of 150 km/h, and offer a driving range exceeding 400 km.
Meanwhile, the long-range FWD variant is likely to come with a more powerful 128 kW (172 hp) motor and a larger 59.8 kWh (net) LFP battery pack. The long-range variant is expected to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.7 seconds, reach a top speed of 150 km/h, and offer a driving range of over 500 km on a full charge. The Toyota Urban Cruiser is likely to be launched in India during the fourth quarter of this year.
2. Toyota Fortuner Mild-Hybrid
The Toyota Fortuner Mild-Hybrid is expected to deliver a slight improvement in fuel efficiency compared to the standard model. It retains the same 2.8-litre turbocharged diesel engine, 6-speed automatic transmission, and optional part-time 4WD system as the conventional Fortuner. The key difference lies in its mild-hybrid system, which replaces the traditional alternator with a belt-integrated starter generator (BSG), supported by a 48-volt lithium-ion battery and a DC-DC converter to provide electric assistance.
The Fortuner Mild-Hybrid’s belt-integrated starter generator (BSG) is a permanent magnet synchronous motor that charges the 48-volt lithium-ion battery during deceleration. This battery, made up of 13 cells with a 4.3 Ah capacity, weighs 7.6 kg and is located under the rear seats.
It supplies stored energy to the vehicle’s 12-volt battery via a DC/DC converter, which powers auxiliary systems like lights and in-cabin electronics. More importantly, the BSG provides up to 12 kW (16 hp) of power and 65 Nm of torque to assist the engine, enhancing acceleration and improving fuel efficiency. The diesel engine itself produces 150 kW (201 hp) and 500 Nm of torque. Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) is expected to launch the Fortuner Mild-Hybrid in June.
